We’ve been over the Rainbows. We’ve had our moments of Pride. Now the ALSO Foundation presents its own awards night for the Melbourne community, writes Richard Clarendon.

It’s not even November, and already everyone’s talking about the ALSO For All of Us Awards. Following on the heels of the Pride and Rainbow awards, the ALSOs are about recognising the achievements of our community, from drag queens to community campaigners and business owners.

Every awards night needs a great MC, and this year that responsibility goes to Paris, along with trophy girl par excellence, Vivienne St James.

The girls say they are excited about the ALSOs, although tight security prevents them from revealing too much. In fact, security around the awards is so tight they’re not allowed to say anything!

It’s all happening at CQ, 113 Queen Street in the city, on two stages: a presentation stage for the award recipients and a separate performance stage. It’s all designed to keep the evening running along smoothly.

MCV can also reveal that voting will occur online, despite initial concerns from ALSO’s CEO Lyn Morgain.

“We were concerned that there may be opportunities to rort the system,” Morgain says.

“But there have been real improvements in internet security recently, and MCV has the kind of online system we believe we can trust.”

“Of course, for those in our community more comfortable with paper-based systems, nomination forms will still be available from MCV – and a phone number will get you the chance to win a major prize.”

Tickets to Melbourne’s brand newest night of nights will be available from the ALSO website beginning October 16: www.also.org.au
