Fundamentalists emerge in all faiths and creeds, and the line between a religion and a cult is one that’s been debated for thousands of years. In Miracle, BalletLab explores the potential for delusional ecstasy, submission, and an obsessive search for the afterlife inherent in cults such as the People’s Temple at Jonestown in Guyana. In 1978, cyanide poisoning claimed 918 cult members in a mass suicide. BalletLab’s attention to sonic as well as visual detail means David Chisholm and Myles Mumford’s sound installation “bathes and shakes the performance in a heavenly ascension of divine recordings and levitating frequencies.” Photo: Jeff Busby Miracle at the Arts House, Meat Market, 5 Blackwood St, North Melbourne. July 16-19, 2009. Bookings: 1300 438 849. |
