Volunteers ugently needed
Written by Rachel Cook

The Victorian AIDS Council (VAC) is calling for volunteers to sell Red Ribbons on Friday, December 28.

Volunteers would be required to sell Red Ribbon products in Melbourne’s CBD for a minimum of two hours and the work can be carried out with a friend.

The Red Ribbon Project started in New York in 1991 as part of a campaign to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS.

Carolyn Warren, Fundraising Coordinator for the VAC, told MCV the Red Ribbon appeal was a vital source of income for men, women and children living with HIV/AIDS:

“From the sale of Red Ribbons we make about $18,000. That’s including the street appeal and people who order them to sell at their offices.”

As an alternative to volunteering, Red Ribbon products can be ordered from the VAC and sold to office colleagues or socially.

The 2008 theme for World AIDS Day, December 1, is: Enjoy Life. Take Control. Stop HIV/AIDS.

As part of AIDS Awareness Week, a series of events have been organised, including a photographic exhibition titled ‘About Face – turning the tide on HIV/AIDS in South Africa’ showing in the theatre foyer of the Gasworks Art Park. The exhibition opens November 24.
