There is widespread support for the notion of gays and
lesbians serving openly in the military, a new survey in the USA has shown.
Conducted by the Washington Post and ABC News, the
poll shows that 75 percent of the American populace support the idea of gays,
lesbians and bisexuals serving in the armed forces. Among Republican voters, 64
percent support the idea of repealing the ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ policy, which
allows same-sex attracted people to serve in the military as long as they stay
closeted.
It was resistance from Republicans that forced
then-President Clinton
to introduce ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ in 1993 as a compromise measure, when he
tried to lift the ban on gays in the military.
Gay and lesbian troops have served openly in Australia since
1992.
