Students rally for same-sex marriage
Written by Rachel Cook

Wintery weather did not prevent a sizeable crowd from attending a rally organised by the National Union of Students (NUS) in support of same-sex marriage on the steps of Melbourne’s State Library last Saturday afternoon.

“Even though the weather was appalling, 200 people showed up,” said NUS spokesperson James Vigus.

“We were really happy; it was a really lively event and a real success.”

Speakers included Halley Conway from the Victorian Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby, and Liz Ross from the Australian Lesbian and Gay Archives, as well as Vigus and Greens’ Senator Sarah Hanson-Young.

A national petition, Equal Rights for All: Support Same Sex Marriage, End Legal Discrimination, bearing more than 30,000 signatures was presented to Hanson-Young, who is to table it in federal parliament.
