Queer activist runs for ALP
Political activist for Trans and LGBTI issues Rosalind Spencer is running for a position in a state ALP policy committee this Saturday.
Spencer, a long-time ALP party member, is hopeful of a role with the Labor Party’s Justice and Democracy Committee.
“One of the benefits for running for the Justice and Democracy Committee is that it is one approach to the Attorney-General Rob Hulls Office who is a friend for the LGBTI community. One can also have some input at the federal level,” Spencer said.
“If we are to make further reforms and changes for GLBTI community we need to get more involved at the state and federal level as well as the grass roots branch level.”
Spencer added that legislative reforms over the years in both the Bracks and Brumby governments demonstrate the ALP’s commitment to GLBTI issues.
However, she highlighted the need for new GLIBT members if the ALP is to have a healthy sense of diversity.
Stephen Jones co-convenor of the Victorian Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby echoed Spencer’s calls for party member diversity.
“It is vital to have diversity within the political spectrum because it is essentially a democratic system which should represent all members of the community.”
However, Jones added that the major parties expect policy solidarity.
“One of the harsh realties of a career in politics is that you generally have to tow the party line much to the expense of your own beliefs and values.”
