Pride March Victoria (PMV) held its annual
general meeting on Tuesday night, at which a minor loss was declared for the
past year.
PMV president, Jamie
Ivarsen, told MCV
he was “very happy” with this year’s Pride March, as well as with the current
state of the organisation.
“It was a huge year of growth and change,”
Ivarsen said. “This year we budgeted
for a loss, and one sponsor pulled out at the last minute; but with the bumper
crowd and weather we did better than we had hoped. If you think of it this way,
last year our loss was $12,000 and this year it was $236.”
Changes to this year’s
Pride March also contributed to its success, Ivarsen said, and PMV is hoping to
make some such changes permanent.
“The inclusion of the
foot race as part of the Outgames Closing Celebration was a huge success; we
would love to see that again,” Ivarsen said. “We also would like to continue
with the messages of support.”
This year’s Pride
March saw the Member for Albert Park, Martin Foley, deliver a message of
support from Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd.
Pride March Victoria
was also able to send two delegates to the InterPride Annual Conference in Zurich, which
significantly raised PMV’s international profile.
“This is my last
hoorah with Pride March,” said Ivarsen, who resigned as president at the AGM. “My
departure is about handing the event over to the community. It’s time for
someone else to step up.”
