Gene Robinson, the openly gay Bishop from Concord, New Hampshire whose consecration has deeply divided the worldwide Anglican Communion, was abused by a heckler while preaching a sermon in London last Sunday, July 13.

While speaking, Robinson was repeatedly interrupted by a young man who shouted “You preach the gospel, yet you depart from it! Repent! Repent!”

Bishop Robinson is visiting Britain despite not being invited to the Lambeth Conference, a global summit of Anglican Church leaders. He spoke of his sadness over being excluded from the conference on BBC TV, where he appeared alongside actor and gay activist Sir Ian McKellen.

“Miracles happen when people who are divided by something get to know one another,” Robinson said.
