Outgames legacy celebrated

The Melbourne Outgames has launched a fund which will financially support sport, human rights and cultural organisations across the Asia Pacific region.

The 1st Asia Pacific Outgames Legacy Fund is the result of the “tremendous success” of the inaugural Asia Pacific Outgames, held in Melbourne earlier this year.

“We always spoke about having a legacy fund in the case of having a surplus; we wanted that money to go back into the community,” Loraine Little, Co-President of Melbourne Outgames Incorporated told MCV.

“Our worst-case scenario was to break even when we were working on a figure of 750 registrations; we well exceeded that amount and we attained corporate sponsorship, which paid for a lot of accreditation material.

“The Outgames was also entirely volunteer-driven, so all those elements helped us to a better than break-even result,” Little explained.

The Legacy Fund will make four grants of $5000 and 10 grants of $1000 to community organisations who meet specific criteria, as listed on the Melbourne Outgames website.

These criteria include: increasing participation in a GLBT sporting, cultural or human rights event or organization; increasing the profile of a GLBT sports, cultural or human rights organisation and its activities; and delivering professional and viable services, and supporting new initiative/s for the applicant organisation.

A further legacy from the 1st Asia Pacific Outgames is an evaluation report, which outlines the knowledge gained from the experience of organising the event.

“The report is pretty unprecedented and will be invaluable to future hosts and other events,” Little concluded.
