The American Catholic News Agency (CNA) has linked a gay band scheduled to march in Barack Obama’s inauguration parade to a festival “infamous for its public lewd acts”. CNA says the Lesbian and Gay Band Association’s website also lists them as appearing at the Southern Decadence festival. The Lesbian and Gay Band Association is a network of lesbian and gay bands comprised of concert and marching bands from various American cities. CNA reports that a press release from the Presidential Inaugural Committee states that the group’s appearance in the Inaugural Parade on January 20 will mark the first time an “openly LGBT group” has been invited to participate. “I am honored to invite these talented groups and individuals to participate in the Inaugural Parade,” President-elect Obama said in the statement. “These organizations embody the best of our nation’s history, diversity and commitment to service. Vice President-elect Biden and I are proud to have them join us in the parade.” Founded 38 years ago, Southern Decadence is held each September in New Orleans, Louisiana. It starts on September 3, 2009 with the ‘Big Dick Contest’, hosted by porn entrepreneur and safe sex advocate Chi Chi LaRue, and includes appearances by the Lady Bunny (a former guest of Midsumma), comedian Shirley Q. Liquor, and a ‘Bad Puppy Model Search’. CNA quoted a 2003 Atlanta Journal Constitution article, saying, “it had ‘become routine’ for men to flash their genitals and perform public sex acts at the event, which bills itself as ‘the Gay Mardis [sic] Gras.’”
