Justice Michael
Kirby spoke at the 'Globalisation For The Common Good: An Interfaith Perspective
Conference' at Melbourne
University on Monday
night.
The conference
aims to bring different cultures and faiths closer together.
Kirby spoke on the
importance of reading holy texts with “the eyes of the 21st
century”.
In relation to
literal interpretations of the Bible such as the book of Leviticus he said: “You
can’t simply look at a text and think that is the answer; you must look at the context
as well.”
The openly gay
High Court judge concluded that he believed in “a loving God who loved
everyone.”
