Hotelier to swap pub for politics

A prominent gay Melbourne businessman and publican, Dale Smedley, is standing for election in the City of Yarra later this year.

Smedley, who has operated DT’s Hotel in Richmond for the past 14 years, believes City of Yarra councilors have been lax in their handling of local issues.

“I think the council needs to clean up their act,” Smedley told MCV.

“The scenario is that rate payers pay council staff, and they need to treat people fairly.

“I have been involved in the Richmond community for over 30 years, and I decided to run three years ago, but I wasn’t confident enough at the time, but now I’m ready.”

Smedley, whose passion for Richmond extends to the broader community, says his decision to stand for Yarra Council is motivated not by political aspirations, but from a desire to help people.

“I don’t want to end up in Spring Street,” he said. “I want to contribute to local people and issues.”

As a consequence of making his political run, Smedley has decided to put the freehold of DT’s up for sale and hand over the business to staff.

“I believe I have a good chance of getting into Council, and I can’t do both jobs, so I thought I should hand it over to the young ones,” he concluded.

City of Yarra elections take place November 29.

Judging by the apperance of Mr Smedley's election posteer on the Town Hall Hotel window do we assume he supports further invasion of the city's footpaths by drinkers? The footpath is NOT a bar - and certainly not through to the early hours of the morning.
