GLBTIQ teachers unite!

A meeting of Victoria’s GLBTIQ teachers will be held at La Trobe University’s city campus next Wednesday, and aims to provide an ongoing network for those participating.

Gay and Lesbian Health Victoria (GLHV) has organised the meeting to address issues facing teachers who may not be able to be open about their sexuality.

“There are teachers who are having a tough time who advocate on behalf on gay students.” Anne Mitchell, director of GLHV told MCV.

GLHV are also hoping to provide support for teachers who want to address homophobia in schools.

Last month, Victorian Education Minister Bronwyn Pike launched a new policy to support same-sex attracted young people and address homophobia in government schools. As reported in MCV #394, the policy, Supporting Sexual Diversity in Schools, will be distributed to all Victorian government schools in the coming weeks.

“We want to talk about this directive to gay teachers,” Mitchell said. “One of the aims [of the meeting] is to let teachers know that this is legal professional activity and that have they support to teach it.

“For schools who have interest in social justice and human rights, they should take up these issues. They need to be getting rid of those last vestiges of homophobia,” she urged.

Mitchell explained that numerous materials exist for teachers to choose from to start educating their students about homophobia.

“We have sex education resources like Catching On [a teaching resource which is part of the STI/AIDS Prevention Education Strategy], and Daniel Witthaus’s Pride and Prejudice [a program which challenges homophobia],” she said.

Mitchell added that next Wednesday’s meeting would be discrete and informal, and urged interested participants to RSVP to her directly via This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
