Protesters dressed as giant condoms were attacked outside St Francis’ Catholic Church on Sunday while objecting to the Pope’s stance on condoms.

The group called the Coalition of Compassion handed out condoms to churchgoers and chanted, “The Pope is wrong, put a condom on.”

“It became a bit hostile,” spokesperson Tim Cole told MCV.

“A few people in their sixties approached us and started pushing us and trying to take our costumes off. One of our members was hit with a handbag by a church-goer.”

Cole said a member of the church’s choir spoke to the group and said he supported their message.

I recognise the affronted church-goers and I know two at least to be nearing 80 or over. The "offence" from their perspective is, I believe, a generational one. Sex is for the bedroom - not the church yard. In their day, sex and contraception were sinful just to think about. "Forgive them for they know not what they do". Hopefully, the protesters can forgive their age and ignorance. The generation they belong to are literally a dying breed.

As for the protesters and their campaign - more power to you - the Pope is dead wrong (and incidentally one of that fading generation).

Not too many more years before commonsense will prevail. Let's hope...
