Gay marriage protests sweep US
Written by US source
LGBT protesters and their straight allies staged a wave of demonstrations across the USA last Saturday, voicing their anger and outrage over Proposition 8, the same-sex marriage ban recently voted into effect in California.

Similar legislation was also passed in Arizona and Florida, while in Arkansas, voters passed a measure aimed at barring gay men and lesbians from adopting children.

Connecticut, which began same-sex weddings last week, and Massachusetts are now the only US states that allow gay marriage.

The Mormon Church, which contributed significantly to the Proposition 8 campaign, was the target of many protesters in San Francisco (pictured). In New York City, more than 10,000 people – waving placards emblazoned with such phrases as ‘No More Mr Nice Gay’ and ‘Straights Against Hate’ – were addressed by speakers including Democratic congressman Anthony Weiner, who was introduced as a “straight ally of marriage equality”, The Age reports.

“We are not going to rest until every citizen in every state in our country has the right to stand up and say this is the man or woman I love and we want to express that love in the form of marriage,” Weiner said.
