Crusader to take on ALSO top job

Melbourne arts tsar Crusader Hillis is the new CEO of the ALSO Foundation.

Currently head of Gasworks Arts Park, Hillis has held influential positions at the Melbourne International Arts Festival and Queer Film and is co-proprietor of queer book shop, Hares & Hyenas.

ALSO president Jason Rostant said Hillis brought a strong background working with diverse communities.

“There is no doubt that Crusader will become a wonderful asset to ALSO as we continue to meet our aims of celebrating, advocating, leading and investing in the breadth of the GLBTIQ community.

“As ALSO celebrates its thirtieth year, we look forward to the next thirty. Crusader’s appointment heralds an exciting new chapter in the organisation’s life.”

Hillis said ALSO was unique in Australia for its work, “particularly in breaking down isolation and advocating work for the wider queer community”.

“Unlike many organisations, it reaches well beyond the urban inner city to take on the interests of diverse and far-flung community members,” Hillis said.

“I have great respect for the visionary people who started ALSO and for those who have steered it over the past three decades.

“It’s not a simple task to balance competing demands on a daily basis; it is both daunting and exciting to be entrusted with the task of taking this key organisation forward into a sustainable future.”

Hillis will officially commence full-time in the CEO role in early May, following a transition period beginning next month.
