YEARS OF REFUSAL—MORRISSEY [ATTACK/LOST HIGHWAY] 4.5/5 Could it be that Steven Patrick Morrissey, he of the great, the late, The Smiths, is back on top of his game? That’s what the critics are saying, tagging Morrissey’s Years of Refusal as the first big comeback on 2009. And that’s putting it lightly as the man is on fire, scorching up the lyric pad with his unique homespun philosophy, whilst using the energy of rhythm and rock to bolster the arrangements.
Turning 50 this year has not hampered this man’s creativity or relevance to a modern audience, and becoming a father (yep, that’s his baby on the sleeve) has brought him rejuvenated hope, even if it is guardedly so (check out ‘It’s Not Your Birthday Anymore’, ‘You Were Good in Your Time’ and ‘I’m OK By Myself’). Morrissey now has someone to live for and he’s embracing it like a new dad should.
