MODERN GUILT

p22_music_395_image3.jpgBECK [DGC]

If you can bring yourself to dismiss Beck’s links to Scientology as you do with Madonna’s rampant attachment to Kaballah, then you’re in for a fab experience. I’ve been a fan of Beck’s exciting musical mash-up of electronica and folk since Midnight Vultures, though I have found his later ventures, like Guero and The Information somewhat less connecting.

On this 8th studio album, Beck has invited Brian ‘Danger Mouse’ Burton (one half of Gnarls Barkly and producer of Gorillaz) to join him on remix duties for a fresher take of the Beck formula. Accordingly, this neat package of 10 songs is stylish like a fashion mag, deep like a psychology book, and whimsical like a merry-go-round. There’s a definite experimental edge that demonstrates Beck’s fondness for renewal, but one that adds rather then subtracts from the interest.
