THE HIGH END OF LOWMarilyn Manson Universal 3 stars I don’t know what I think of this. My first thought was that Manson’s ‘antichrist superstar’ persona that has seduced brooding teens for more than ten years is getting a little tired. The same shock-rock antics are here – freaky sound bites, sharp, irreverent lyrics, hoarse, down-in-the-dumps verses; and then stomp-down-the-hall-and-slam-the-front-door choruses. Part of me wants him to grow up a bit and release a collection of neo-folk songs or something – I reckon he could really produce some magic. But I can’t see that happening. He shows no signs of abandoning the image and the schtick for which he has become known. And that’s okay – because The High End of Low is a good album. The man is an artist, but an artist very close to self-parody.
