To actually suggest that I really REALLY like Beyoncé’s new album is as much a shock to me as it may be to you. Despite that introduction of a naff stage persona that borrows heavily from drag and gay culture, I am…Sasha Fierce is a powerhouse of royal diva pop.

The real interest in this album is Beyoncé’s re-connection with the lost art of singing. Her last few collections were breathy jumbles of linguistic mayhem, more pussy struttin’ than vocal prancin’.

But now, Miss Fierce is indeed farouche, and for all the good reasons. She demonstrates an inspirational singing voice on mega ballads like ‘Disappear’. ‘Halo’ and ‘Broken-Hearted Girl’, sassy electro RnB on ‘Radio’, Diva’ and ‘Video Phone’ and the raw genderplay insight on the magnificent new single, ‘If I Were a Boy’.
