p26_music_362_image3-250.jpgHUMAN NATURE [SONY BMG]

It’s beginning to sound a lot like Christmas. Why? Well, the Nature boys have the third instalment of their impossibly catchy soul classics CD series out. And after my public caning from an overly-concerned reader for not exulting Guy Sebastian as he so apparently deserved, best I make a point of stating that Australia’s biggest boyband has also recorded an album of well known soul covers with authentic musicians and Motown singers, just like Mr Sebastian. Or rather, using the same formula that Guy has borrowed from them.

All the big hits are here (‘Get Ready’, ‘River Deep’, Tears of a Clown’, ‘Ooh Ooh Baby’, ‘It Takes Two’ and even ‘Jingle Bells’) with the assistance of Smokey, Martha, Mary Wilson and The Temptations.

And I thought critics were supposed to be thick skinned? It is alright to dish it out but not take it, I see.

Sorry if you felt you were publicly caned, John. As you insist on dumping on The Memphis Album, it is worth pointing out to the readers of your reviews that Human Nature acted as no more than session musicians doing back up vocals for the Motown legends on their record. Did not even record their vocals in the same studio, from what I have heard. And none of these legends have had any more to do with them, except Smoky coming downunder for a couple of TV appearances last November.

Now Steve Cropper co-produced Guy's album with him, and Guy and the MGs recorded the album together in the same studio in Memphis.

The MGs arrive downunder in a couple of days to spend a month touring with Guy as his backing band right across Australia. A long-time friend of Steve Cropper has told us Steve is as excited as a 16 year old kid about this tour, and thinks Guy's talent is "off the charts".

Now you may say that The MGs acted as session musicians for Guy on The Memphis Album. It is my humble opinion that if I was a musician I would much prefer to have legends as my session musicians than to be the session musicians of legends as HN were.

Huge difference between Get Ready and TMA, John. Until even one of those legends comes here to do a real tour with HN it is all just "Smokey and mirrors": probably one of the reasons Get Ready has long disappeared off the charts and The Memphis Album is still there.
