God, I feel so old using the term “chillout” in a review. It feels like a parody of itself, since the genre is so loose now. Anything with a cruisy beat, a sultry vocal, an air of mystery, a drum loop, an indie edge or a pop attitude can be described as chilled. Even classic vocal house has become chillout now.
However, as long as the choons are chunky, these Chillout Sessions double compilations will remain relevant, respected and great value for money. This one features crossover acts like The Presets, Sam Sparro, MGMT, Hot Chip and even Amy Winehouse, alongside cooler underside stuff from Ratatat, CCS, Fred Falke, Shazam Ted & Francis and the divine Jose Gonzales with a guitar-led cover of Massive’s ‘Teardrops’.
