Too much sex?
While I reserve the rights of my fellow GLBTIQ Australians to enjoy their leisure time however they like, I confess it disturbs me to see so much emphasis placed on sex.

This week’s edition of MCV (#387, Thursday June 5) contained one article about porn; another that looked at the way sex had fallen off the radar of the gay marriage debate; a safe sex comic from the AIDS Council that focused on a young man losing his virginity; and numerous references to and depictions of sexual desire and the sex act in advertising and other features, from art exhibitions to sex toys.

Am I the only gay man who is concerned about such saturation of sex in our so-called ‘community’ media?

Not only does such high representation of sex depict our community as thinking with our (collective) dicks, it also reinforces body image issues which can result in steroid abuse and eating disorders; and encourages gay men to see one another as objects rather than as individuals.

Am I just being a prude? I would welcome other perspectives on this issue from my fellow MCV readers should this letter spark similar concerns in others.

Brian, Kensington
