I would like to raise a point about the opinion piece by Doug Pollard in MCV 387 (‘No sex please, we’re Aussies’, Thursday June 5).

Personally, I disagree with his view that lesbian sex is more accepted because of its omnipresence in straight porn and mainstream TV. Even though it’s included in many straight porn films, most lesbians would agree that what’s depicted it is a far cry from real lesbian sex - and that goes for TV, too. We see a representation of lesbian sex that’s palatable for straight audiences, and more importantly, doesn’t threaten men. We’re a long way from showing anything close to real lesbian sex; it would be far too confronting for too many people.

Society has been taught for hundreds of years that women are a thing of beauty, there to be gazed at and of course depicted as objects of desire; this is the reason you see lesbian ‘sex’ and not gay sex.

It has far more to do with gender than sexuality. If men had been objectified through the ages as women have, you would see gay male sex. Unfortunately for gay men, they’re largely the only ones who wish to see men having sex with each other; whereas the type of ‘sex’ we see ‘lesbians’ in straight porn and on TV have can be a turn-on for straight men and many women.

It’s an interesting debate, but as I said, until straight society considers men to be a thing of beauty they will see no point in depicting two men making love.
