Great to see the interview with gay Australian pop star Sam Sparro in MCV last week (#382, Thursday July 10): and not only because he’s cute as hell and his music is instantly engaging!

The message that Sparro sends the rest of the world, and young queer kids in particular is that you can be gay, out, and successful in the music industry. If only the previous generation of pop stars had known that (and yes, Morrissey, I’m looking at you!).

David from Northcote,

I agree re: Sam Sparrow. It's great to see out queer musicians. But with all respect, I have a bone to pick with the Morrissey comment. Despite there no doubt being more important reasons to put pen to paper in such conservative times, as a Smiths nut I can't help myself but demand credit where it's due!

Regardless of the ins or outs, Morrissey's work makes up many a queer's record catalogue. The camp wit, attitude and bent delivery of The Smiths assured I never felt like the only (angry) queer in the village. His songs offered my teenage version of self reams of smug dialogue to throw back at small-minded folks who dared give me grief for being 'different' in the town I grew up in. This, on reflection, was more useful than many (repeated) sentences you would hear in, say, a contemporary 'gay dance track'.

I dunno you could have a point. But if Morrissey was in fact hiding among others in a long row of closets, my theory is that his closet was the only one decorated with very bright, camp wallpaper, posters of queer icons and, well, perhaps some Doc Martens... and definitely a dartboard with a photo of Thatcher pinned to it!
