Matthew Mitcham (5)

The only depressing thing about reading the excellent and heart-warming interview with out Aussie diver Matthew Mitcham in the latest issue of your paper is that he’s alone, at least as far as openly gay and lesbian Australian athletes go.

Our country is sending 432 athletes to compete in Beijing, according to a news report I read today at ABC Online. You do the maths. So where are the other 42 GLBT athletes who will be representing Australia at the games? In the closet, that’s where.

It’s a scandal and a disgrace that homophobia is keeping them there. For god’s sake it’s the 21st century!

I look forward to an Olympic Games where openly gay sportsmen like Matthew Mitcham - as wonderful and forthright as he is - are no longer the exception, but the rule.

Craig, Preston

I am from the USA but I just wanted to say that I was very proud to see Matthew Mitcham win the gold in the mens diving last night. I was rooting for him the whole time. Go Matt Go!

Just a correction on the number of gay/lesbian Olympians for Australia: there will in fact be two others joining Matthew Mitcham - Rennae Stubbs (Tennis) & Matthew Helm (Diving), two athletes also open about their sexuality.
