Thank you for the wonderful article on Matthew Mitcham (‘Making a splash’, MCV #393, Thursday July 18).

It’s really inspiring to see a person of Matthew’s standing to be so down-to-earth and regular, just like any of us. But he’s not, which makes him even more extraordinary. What’s more, it’s nice to see a positive gay role model young people can finally look up to, someone who embraces their sexuality as a part of who they are, and more importantly, someone who didn’t achieve their notoriety by dancing, singing or living in a house for months on end on national television.

I wish him all the best in Beijing. He is a true champion.
