I just wanted to take time out and say thanks for the story on your recent article on lesbian health (MCV #393, Thursday July 17).

It’s true that there is so little information on lesbian health: if you compare the research into women’s health compared to men’s health the lack of findings is shameful given it’s the 21st century. For example, many people seem to be under the misguided notion that lesbians don’t get sexually transmitted infections. Well I’m a lesbian, and I’ve had two STIs and they were both from lesbian sex.

I also want to point out that the vast majority of lesbians do not practice safe sex because they have never been targeted as a group at risk. I had given up thinking lesbian sexual health was ever going to be properly addressed, so I was overjoyed to see your article, but the issue definitely needs more exposure. Congratulations to the ALSO Foundation for taking this step.
