As a member of the Australian Defence
Force (ADF) for more than 23 years, and open about my sexuality during the last
two postings (five years in total) and one recent six-month UN deployment, I
can categorically state that I have not been subjected to any negative
attitudes or actions. In addition, my partner of 11 years has been to an
official ‘Dining-In Night’ as my partner.
This will certainly prolong my
career and I have to say - what was all the fuss about in the 1990s?
I’ve had more support from the ADF
than from my own family, and now I have a wonderful collection of SODs (Sisters
of Dorothy) who at times are surprised by the support provided to gays and
lesbians in the ADF.
While the situation may not be
perfect, relationship policies should be considered quite progressive in
comparison to the defence forces of other countries.
