I write in regards to the story in MCV #394 (Thursday July 24) which announces that the Victorian Education Department has launched a new policy to support same-sex attracted young people in schools.

While I applaud this move by the Department, I am concerned at how many schools will actually implement it. High schools are the most homophobic places on earth, and as we are probably all aware after recent comments from Jeff Kennett and the backlash from gay educators, the results of homophobia on teenagers can be devastating.

I was not bullied at school, but witnessed many who were because people thought they were gay or lesbian; and most often they were not, but just the suspicion was enough to make sure you would be harassed daily.

We still have kids killing themselves because they are gay; and we still have parents wondering why their children may have committed suicide, because even after their deaths they still don’t know that it may have been because of who they were.

This is an ongoing tragedy in our society, and I only hope that the teachers who now have the power to do something about it will have the guts to do so.

Michael, Northcote
