Richard Watts reports on
the Million Paws Walk.
This Sunday May 18, at countless different
locations across the country, pets and their people will take part in the Royal
Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) Million Paws Walk, enjoying
a day out together, and supporting the organisation’s vital work.
Funds raised through entry fees and
the sale of merchandise on the day help assist the RSPCA to operate its animal
shelters, support its inspectorate services, and provide community education on
animal welfare issues.
Each year, the RSPCA in Australia
investigates more than 42,000 complaints of animal cruelty and neglect; so
taking part in the Million Paws Walk is a great way to help animals in need.
In 2007, the Million Paws Walk was
attended by more than 40,000 people and 17,000 pets and this year the RSPCA are
looking forward to making the event their biggest and best ever.
In Victoria, more than 16,000 people across the
state participated last year, helping raise more than $200,000 to assist with shelters,
inspectorate, and veterinary and education services. This is your chance to
take part in the doggy social event of the year and help to raise money for
animals in need!
While the main Walk will take place
around Albert Park
Lake (with registrations taking place
from 8:30am, and the Walk proper kicking off at 10am), the event also happens
simultaneously in Werribee (President’s Park, Wyndham Vale), Geelong (Eastern Gardens Rotunda), and
numerous other locations around the state.
The Million Paws Walk provides a carnival
atmosphere, with entertainment, a great variety of food and drinks,
demonstrations and exhibitions, as well as a huge range of pet care products
and accessories you can buy on the day – and of course, as every pet owner
knows, a furry friend is a great ice-breaker when it comes to striking up a
conversation with that attractive stranger!
