A world of pride
{gallery}392/Pride{/gallery} Recent weeks have seen public affirmations of LGBT pride across the globe, writes Richard Watts.

From Budapest to San Francisco, and New York to New Delhi, the past few weeks have seen the northern hemisphere’s LGBT community take to the streets en masse to celebrate their love and pride.

Not every march went off without a hitch.

In Cuba, pride organisers were arrested by the police, while in several cities in Eastern Europe police were called in to protect revellers from anti-gay protesters; most recently in the Hungarian capital Belgrade last Saturday, July 5.

“The fact that the police were protecting us is an important message to the neo-Nazi criminals and the public at large,” a shaken European Parliament member Katalin Levai told Reuters, after the car in which she was riding in Belgrade Pride was attacked.

Two gay businesses in Belgrade, a bar and a sauna, were firebombed in the days leading up to the march.

Meanwhile, in London, members of Britain’s defence forces marched in uniform for the first time at a UK pride event.

“It's been an emotional moment for most people,” army staff sergeant Lavinia Goddard told The Times Online. “To be able to unite your job and your personal life finally feels wonderful. We’re not there yet but attitudes are changing fast.”
