A touch of class
red-river-gum-300.jpgFrom furniture to electronics: isn’t it time you pampered yourself, asks Richard Watts?

If you’re thinking about handmade timber furniture, then consider the beauty of Red Gum.

River Red Gums (Eucalyptus camaldulensis), as their common name suggests, are associated with water, particularly river water, while ‘Red’ refers to the deep colour of the timber. River Red Gum forests are the most widely distributed forest type in Victoria, and though much maligned and devalued, the Red Gum has nevertheless won a place in our hearts, as anyone who’s visited the Barmah Forest or boated along the Murray will attest.

Here, unfortunately, the romance stops. Too many of our Red Gums were chopped up for use as railway sleepers and tramway blocks. Entire forests of Red Gum are driven over every day - trampled until they find their way into our gardens as retaining walls (perhaps a less ignominious fate than firewood).

Its strong, durable timber means that Red Gum wood is ideal for outdoors furniture, but its usage doesn’t stop there. You only need to polish a piece to see the deep, lustrous red with intertwined grain revealed before your eyes.

Today, as former railway sleeper cutters decide that trains can run on concrete sleepers, furniture makers can elevate this regal timber to the status it deserves.
