It’s a long way from Wantirna to West Darfur in Sudan, but that hasn’t stopped Melbourne comedian Trent McCarthy learning as much from the group of young Sudanese men he’s been mentoring for the last year as they’ve learned from him.Drawing from his experiences comes a new stand-up show as part of this year’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Trent McCarthy Is Turning Sudanese, which also includes live music by the delightful Sudanese singer, Ajak Kwai. “As well as making my audience laugh (mostly at my expense!) I’m hoping the show will help overturn some of the misconceptions about Sudanese young people that have recently circulated. All proceeds from the show will be donated to the Sudanese Lost Boys Association of Australia, providing education and support to Sudanese young people,” says McCarthy. TRENT MCCARTHY IS TURNING SUDANESE @ Northcote Town Hall, Studio 1, 189 High St, Northcote. March 25 – April 6. Bookings through Ticketmaster 1300 660 013 or www.comedyfestival.com.au
