Paul Knight, who is currently studying at the Glasgow School of Art, is one of the artists selected for NEW08.

“It’s a chance to be exposed to a whole different environment and learn a new set of experiences from a different culture,” Knight says of studying in Glasgow. “The art scene is quite similar [to Melbourne], quite diverse and potentially quite edgy, but the culture generally in Scotland is quite different to Australia.”

One such difference became apparent when Knight was looking for models for his NEW08 works, which explore human intimacy and our need for relationships, and the form of the body in a sculptural way.

“One of the things I’ve noticed about being in Scotland is that people… are very comfortable talking about pornography, but they’re not so comfortable talking about intimacy,” Knight says. “It’s easy for people, when they see photographs of people engaged in sex, to say it’s pornography, because pornography operates as a distance, whereas intimacy has to be talked about from the first person.”

As many of Knight’s works are sexually explicit, he was required to develop a close rapport with his models in order to capture the images he required.

“It’s a process of building a sense of trust between me and them … because at the end of the day, I need to know they’re able to perform on the day and take part in the way I want them to."
