p14_arts_agenda_391_image2-250.jpgThe most eagerly-anticipated screen culture event on the local calendar is indubitably the Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF).

Although the full program isn’t available to the public until next Friday July 11, the advance word is already out about a number of films of GLBT interest that are screening in MIFF this year.

Documentaries to watch out for include Bastardy, about 63 year old gay Aboriginal elder, award-winning actor and cat burglar, Jack Charles; Words of Advice: William S. Burroughs on the Road, about the Beat Generation author of Junky, Queer and Naked Lunch; a disturbing true story about gay Red Cross director John Scott, who together with his lover, Greg Scriviner, was murdered in Fiji in 2001, An Island Calling; and Be Like Others (pictured), an intimate and unflinching look at the lives of young gay Iranians who opt for gender reassignment over the harassment they face every day.
