| Blood on the coral |
IMAGE: Tim Silver Untitled (The Tuvaluan Project) 2007A group of nine coral atolls in the remote Pacific, the low-lying archipelago of Tuvalu rises just two metres above sea level. Consequently the islands, its people and their culture are threatened by rising sea levels caused by global warming. In The Tuvaluan Project, artist Tim Silver merges the present-day situation on Tuvalu with a hefty dose of 1970s-1980s Italian cannibal films. This genre of exploitation films often featured illogical narratives and clichéd representations of foreign cultures in a surreal mix of travelogue, found footage and gore. Presented as film frames offering multiple interpretations but no conclusion, this exhibition invites audiences to bring their own imaginations into play. THE TUVALUAN PROJECT @ The Centre for Contemporary Photography until August 30, 404 George Street Fitzroy. Gallery hours: Wednesday – Saturday, 11am – 6pm, free entry. www.ccp.org.au
