Last year, Melbourne’s avant-guard dance company BalletLab wowed audiences with the stunning Brindabella. Now, under the guidance of Artistic Director Phillip Adams, the company’s latest work is ready to be presented to the world.
Axeman Lullaby draws upon a long tradition of the Australian Gothic, as typified by Thomas Keneally’s The Chant of Jimmy Blacksmith; and explores the uneasy relationship between early settlers and the bush. At the centre of the work, Adams has placed champion axeman Laurence O’Toole (pictured), creating a powerful metronome around which dancers and live musicians will perform.
AXEMAN LULLABY @ Chunky Move Studios, 111 Sturt Street, Southbank, August 7 – 17. Bookings: www.balletlab.com
