The story goes it was the drag queens who threw the first bricks at the Stonewall riots in 1969.The Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village was a hub for homosexuals of the day, and on the eve of Judy Garland's funeral the last thing the queens were in the mood for was a raid from the police. They fought back and in so doing symbolically launched the contemporary gay and lesbian rights movement. The Victorian Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby will celebrate the 40th anniversary of Stonewall with two high profile community fundraisers – a mega concert at the Glasshouse (with yours truly hosting) and including a performance by Lou Bennett (pictured), and a Forum discussing the road ahead at Loop. Make the effort: it’s part of your history. Performance: The Glasshouse, 52 Gipps St, Collingwood. Friday, June 26, 8.30pm. Forum: Loop, 23 Meyers Place, City. Saturday, June 27, 2pm. www.vglrl.org.au
